Remodel Your Kitchen Cabinets for a New Look
By Leroy Calstard | September 5, 2008
Remodeling your kitchen and bathroom is a popular and practical way to update the look and convenience of your home. It also adds to the resale value of your property. Despite the benefits, issues involving plumbing, wiring and the sheer number of new appliances that may be required in kitchen and bath renovations can quickly turn the project into a costly endeavor.
A simple way to give these very important spaces a new look on a small budget is to consider a cabinet renovation. Since the cabinets are frequently the focal point of both of these rooms, refinishing or repainting them will give your space a brand new look for less. This home renovation project can take a good deal of your time and sweat though, so it is a good idea to evaluate your cabinets thoroughly before putting in the effort to redo them. If you would rather get rid of them eventually, perhaps you should just hold off until you can replace them completely.
You should be absolutely certain that the effort you spend to update your current cabinetry is going to pay off. Take a very close look at your current cabinets. Confirm that potential problem spots like gaps between the cabinet and the wall, unsound doors and broken drawers can be easily fixed during the refinishing process. It is also a good possibility that some antique cabinets are just not going to refinish cleanly, no matter how much hard work you put in to them. However, after close inspection, you might instead decide that a refinishing job will do the trick. If this is the case, you should then proceed to start wading through the wide variety of choices in finishes and colors.
There are so many different ways to refinish bathroom and kitchen cabinetry, and not all of them are just a matter of applying paint. If the cabinets in question are caked with dirt and grime, you might want to bleach them before you take the trouble to go any further. If bleaching just does not do the job, you can go a step further by stripping the layers of finish and paint from the wood and reapplying the same. If you are happy with the color and grain of the wood of your cabinets, you can just stain the surface and apply a coat or two of polyurethane for protection. If you would rather have an entirely new look, then pick a palette that is going to compliment your existing decor and get to work. You can choose to get very creative with this and use painting techniques like sponging, antiquing and ragging for a bit of the unexpected in your kitchen or bathroom. For more information on this, check out companies or businesses that can help you with these renovations such as your local home improvement store.
Redoing cabinetry can be a good project to consider when you think about renovating your kitchen and bathroom. Let your personality guide your next kitchen or bathroom remodel with the cabinets suited to your unique taste and talents.

The Consumption of Popcorn in America!
By A.L.Castle | September 5, 2008
Popcorn is consumed more in America than anywhere else in the world. Americans eat more than 17 billion quarts of popcorn. We each consume more than 60 quarts per year.
We love our popcorn salted and buttered. We even like to splurge and enjoy popcorn gourmet style. We add caramel, nuts of all kinds, different flavors such as cinnamon, blue raspberry, chocolate, pizza, cool ranch, spicy and more.
Popcorn can be enjoyed on a weight loss program too. It makes a great snack since it is whole grain. Just don’t add butter or candy flavorings. Make popcorn in an air popper for even less calories. To keep seasonings sticking to air popped popcorn , just give it a quick spritz with a buttered flavored oil.
Popcorn makes a great snack to take with you as you travel. Make different flavors of your favorite gourmet popcorn and store it in zip top bags for the whole family. It will stay fresh for over a week.
Gourmet popcorn makes a treat that everyone loves. With prepackaged glazes and seasonings it’s easy to make gourmet popcorn. You add the glaze to the popcorn popper before popping. The glaze coats all the popcorn. The glazes are not made for use in air poppers.
Popcorn makes a great treat for eating at home while watching movies. Compared to the same amount of a bag of chips, popcorn is a lot cheaper to make. It costs pennies and is alot better for you.
Popcorn is one of the most consumed snacks. You can enjoy popcorn almost anywhere. Popcorn is massed produced by many snack producers. They make it different flavors such as nacho cheese, white cheddar and others.
Almost 75 % of popcorn is consumed at home. The other 25 % is enjoyed from flea markets, movie theaters, concession stands, ball parks and large retail stores.
Popcorn has a song about it. It is sung at baseball games as part of our national pastime. The song is about popcorn with a caramel coating and peanuts. Popcorn is used for holiday decorations. It is strung together on string and used as garland for Christmas trees and fireplace decorations.

By John Bakers | September 5, 2008
Remodeling the kitchen is a pretty big task. You should tackle one thing at a time in order to make the transition smooth and to cut down on the stress and strain of the remodeling process. When you begin to remodel the counter tops you will need to take a lot of things into consideration to get the job done right. Depending on the current condition of the existing countertops you may need to put in all new countertops or just refinish the existing ones. When it comes to laminated counter tops, dealing with glue can be a hassle, but it is easier if you how to deal with it.
The Easiest Solution
The easiest way to remodel kitchen countertops is to completely install new ones. However, if your existing counter tops are in good shape then it could be more budget friendly to use them and just update them. How do you decide? Just use your own judgment, look at costs and examine what you already have. If the basic structure and condition of them are fine then use them. However, if you have a laminate top you might decide the time involved is too much and decide to replace. Take your budget and time into consideration, too.
Removing old laminate tops involves using special solvent to loosen the glue. You have to be especially careful not to gouge the wood during the removal process. After you have the tops off you will need to smooth out the surface. If you just need to refinish wooden tops then go ahead and remove the old finish and apply the new finish.
If you decide that replacing is the best option then you start by removing the old countertop. You will need to loosen it and pull it off. You will also need to clean the area and sand it down to ensure it is level.
Options
The type of surface you use to replace your countertops is purely your choice and will be based upon your budget and taste. The home improvement stores offer many options. You can get pre-made counter tops that come cut and ready to install. This is going to be the least time consuming choice. If you want a richer look then go for granite or stone. Be aware, though, these are heavy, hard to work with and quite expensive. You will almost always want to order these pre-cut, so measuring for fit is very important and must be accurate.
Enhancing the Finished Job
To enhance your newly installed counter tops you should consider some track lighting. These specially placed and focused lights can really add a charm to your new counter tops. You can easily find a variety of styles that will work with your kitchen. While you are installing the counter tops, installing some lighting fixtures is a simple task that will not add much time to the job, but will add a lot to the final look of your kitchen cupboards designs.

Quality Coffee Bean for the Lucky Coffee Drinker
By Linden Walhard | September 4, 2008
A person who makes coffee beverages as a profession is referred to as a “barista.” As expected, the barista experience will shape how coffee beans are judged. Professional coffee tasters or coffee contest judges are known as “cuppers,” and company buyers share the sentiment of baristas in hopes of finding beans that will produce a delicious drink. But, the barista is the one who faces the consumers day in and day out and directly receives feedback on the results of this effort.
For this reason, let’s take a moment to explore the opinion of the barista when it comes to the coffee bean and the coffee drink itself.
Roughly seventy countries grow coffee from which beans are produced, including the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean, Hawaii and South America. All are situated within a band around the equator of approximately twenty-five degrees to the north or south.
It should come as no surprise then that, given the differences in climate, altitude, techniques and equipment, beans from different countries have distinct differences.
Even so, coffee plants fall into two main categories: robusta and Arabica. The Arabica contains about half of the caffeine found in the robusta. It is used almost exclusively for the highest quality coffees since its beans are stronger in flavor and aroma.
Since coffee grows better at higher altitudes, some arabica beans are grown as high as three thousand feet or higher while others are grown at a much lower altitude.
From this point forward, it tends to differ based upon whether or not the consumer plans to roast their own coffee beans. Fresh, unroasted beans are soft, green and have a vegetative odor which is very normal prior to any roasting.
For those who want roasted beans, the categories broaden significantly starting with the light or “cinnamon” which is highly caffeinated and acidic.
The medium roast, or “American,” is a very popular choice since it is used by major vendors, such as Folger. But, it is not considered a quality cup by the standards of most baristas.
Dark or “City” roast is found in many specialty shops and has endured a process to reduce the acidic taste as well as the caffeine. This results in a sweeter, less bitter cup of coffee. This is typically the standard selection for the average espresso.
Next is the “French” roast and was named as such because of the French’s tendency for the more full-bodied coffees. The beans are very dark brown in color and have an oily sheen or texture. Take a close look and sniff so you do not confuse them with beans that have simply been burnt, as there is a big difference.
The “Italian” roast is the darkest on the drinkable scale and is often the chosen beans for specialty expresso. The deep brown color and strong aroma are quite distinct and, certainly, produce a quality cup of coffee. The regular sampler of this high quality bean is one lucky coffee drinker!

Coffee From Around the World
By Rob Carlton | September 4, 2008
When it comes to coffee, the word variety is only meaningful when the blends produced around the world are all considered. There are so many different blends that variety may even seem like an understatement. Actually, the best way to describe the many blends would be to say it is a buffet of flavor. Each producing country has their own unique twists on coffee that lend a distinct flavor to them. One taste and a coffee expert knows exactly where the brew is from. Learning about coffee blends from around the world is one good way to become an expert on this favorite drink.
Places to go and Taste Test
Colombian coffee is well known throughout the world. One blend from this country is the La Esperanza. These beans are grown at around 6,000 feet and have a high-toned flavor with an aroma that is a blend of cherry and milk chocolate. The taste is something of magnificence. There is also the Supremo which is a complex brew that has hints of vanilla and semi-sweet chocolate, but the flavor fades quickly so it is best enjoyed freshly brewed and hot. Hawaii has the Kona. It can be a medium or dark roast and a light acid taste. However, the espresso here is the leading favorite with its dark and strong flavor. Africa has a blend, Tanzanian Peaberry, that is grown on the southern slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The peaberry bean is a single oval in shape with no flat side. It is a high acid and light body blend. Ethiopia brings a citrusy blend that combines the taste of ginger, orange peel and lemon to create a tart, chocolate flavor. This blend is specific to the Yirgacheffe region. India with a three month long stint of wet winds produces puffy yellow beans that have a pungent brew with undertones of apricot and also the Jumboors blend that has interesting sweet raisins tones. Indonesia has a light roasted blend that is sweet and flowery in taste. The coffee flower is retained to give the brew a hint of cherry taste. In the north are the darker blends with spicy and tropical flavors with hints of cedar and grapefruit. In Vietnam there is the Robusta that is made with a wash, dry and polish process that produces a woody taste. The last place to try out would be Jamaica. The same peaberry beans of Africa can be found here, but the taste is completely different. It is full bodied and has a sweet acid taste with flowery characteristics and is strong brewed in your coffee makers.
With all these different places to try out the rainbow of coffee varieties, it is no surprise so many people could not live without their cup of coffee or pot, whatever the case may be, every day.

Coffee: Roasted, Brewed, and Enjoyed at Home
By Vince Paxton | September 4, 2008
Coffee roasters come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, in addition to just as many prices. Prices can range from double digits all the way to thousands. However, buyers should be cautious because higher price does not always mean higher quality. Other than purchasing a reliable brand, there are a few other tips to follow.
The first question one should ask to them self is: How much involvement is wanted? Some people want to do it all: mix, stir, measure, and create. Roasters are available using these ideas as well. There are some that are very simple, stove top, and they look like a pot with a tight lid and unique handle. The handle has a crank which stirs the beans during the roasting process. The stirring of beans is essential because it keeps them from burning in addition to air circulation. These should always have a thermometer in the lid so that the temperature can be controlled.
Then there is the do it all roasters. A specific amount of green beans are added and then when the lid is closed the person can walk away and not have to worry. These are the deluxe models of course. They come with thermostat control and built in thermometers. They also have air flow technology and canisters that rotate. Then there is also an automatic shut off. The roasters do not seem to have been invented with a feature that eliminates the smoke from the process.
The next question to ask is how well do the roasters circulate air and heat? The most common of the roasters are ones that work like air popcorn machines. While the beans are being tossed around inside the machine the hot air circulates throughout. This allows for even roasting. Some of these models come with a feature that will remove the skin that bursts from the bean as well. It is quite common for them to come with glass exteriors so that the process can be observed easily. More often than not they come with pre-set amounts and typically range from light to dark. The air circulation is necessary to the entire process of roasting. Drum roasters help alleviate the problem of burning. They drum rotates and uses gravity to toss around the beans. This is better than those that have just an instrument that stirs at the bottom.
For those who want to be more involved in the process than simply using your one cup coffee maker, find a roaster with a window so that roasting process can be tailored as it is occurring. It is good to note as well that the more beans that are being roasted the more smoke that is produced. Roasting areas should be properly ventilated. Roasters used to be only for professionals, but now they are available for in home roasting. It makes dinner parties that much more impressive and one of a kind.

Learn The History Of Knifes
By Jack Blacksmith | September 4, 2008
There are many different craft hobbies where people make items as opposed to buying them. When thinking of making something themselves, one item not too many people think about is knives. Many individuals have learned how to make knives themselves. Until they’ve actually made a knife themselves, they don’t fully understand what goes into the making of a knife. It’s much more than just a blade of steel that goes into a wooden (in most cases) handle. It’s a complete process including finishing, heat treating and different steels that go in the making of the knife to get to the finished product.
When a jeweled metal knife is finished, it is done from the inside, giving the outside of the knife an incredible style. The use of stonewash finishing will make your knife look like it’s been used. The knife will have an antique look with the use of abrasive patterns. The older antique look is very popular today in many things in life, including knives. Vibed finishing will give a worn look to your knife. Although, each of these styles is popular, they each require a specific type of finishing to get the result you want.
Annealing is a process of heat treating that’s very popular in making a knife that’s both powerful and easy to use. With annealing or heat-treating, they use the maximum amount of heat they can possible use before they let it cool. Parts of the heat-treating are hardening and tempering. Hardening involves allowing the knife to harden to a certain degree to get the result the user wants. Tempering is a method of controlling the heat treatments and, at the same time, controlling the degree of cooling required and allowed. All of these processes will determine what the finished product look likes as well as how sharp the knife becomes as a finished product.
There are different kinds of steel used in the making of knives, with the most common being stainless steel. The description of stainless steel, according to knife specialists, is when the chromium is greater than 13%. Stainless steel got its name from the terms “stain less” meaning that it would not stain from rust or corrosion. So, knives that are not 100% chromium may still rust or corrode. You may wonder why they don’t use a larger percent than 13% of chromium to make sure the knives don’t ever rust. The reason is that a knife that is not stainless steel will generally last longer and be more powerful and durable than a stainless steel knife.
Damascus steel is another metal that is used in the making of knives. Damascus makes knives that are beautiful, but may not necessarily last as long as they should.
